CUG Holds Seminar on “Carbon Peak” and “Carbon Neutral” in the Yangtze River Economic Belt

May 11, 2021

CUG held Seminar on “Carbon Peak” and “Carbon Neutral” in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Present at the Seminar were CHENG Jinhua, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, LAI Xulong, Vice President of CUG, and researchers from the School of Earth Sciences, School Earth Resources, School of Materials Science and Chemistry, School of Environmental Studies, School of Engineering, School of Marine Science and Technology, School of Economics and Management, School of Geography and Information Engineering, School of Public Administration, and State Key Laboratory of Biology and Environmental Geology.

LAI Xulong pointed out that China’s striving to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060 was based on China’s sense of responsibility to build a community with a shared future for mankind and its’ commitment to building a clean and beautiful world. The Yangtze River Economic Belt is a demonstration belt of China’s ecological advancement and conservation, so it matters that the Yangtze River Economic Belt takes the lead to peak carbon dioxide emissions and achieve carbon neutrality. However, there are stark geological differences within the Yangtze River Economic Belt, so he stressed that interdisciplinary research was very helpful.

The researchers from 9 schools and 1 laboratory had deep discussions from the perspectives of their own areas.

All the participants agreed that CUG should give full play to its advantage in earth science to integrate mechanism, technologies, methods, modes, policies, and systems for the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
