CUG Starts Drawing up Carbon Neutral Plan

Apr 25, 2021

CUG has started drawing up its Carbon Neutral Plan. It is the first university carbon neutral plan of China, which includes carbon disclosure on campus, targets, ways, measures, rules and regulations, etc.

Carbon neutrality refers to achieving net-zero carbon dioxide emissions. This can be done by balancing emissions of carbon dioxide with its removal (often through carbon offsetting) or by eliminating emissions from society (the transition to the “post-carbon economy”). It is used in the context of carbon dioxide-releasing processes associated with transportation, energy production, agriculture, and industry.

On September 22, 2020, President XI Jinping made the official announcement that China will strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. Since then, many enterprises have made plans for carbon neutrality. For higher education institutions, making such plans not only helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions but also arouses environment consciousness among students and society. What’s more, carbon neutrality on campus is the driving force of research and application.

CUG aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions significantly, peak carbon dioxide emissions earlier, and achieve carbon neutrality before 2045. CUG, as a university, will contribute its wisdom to the comprehensive development of a low carbon society.
