CUG Establishes Research Center for Solid Earth Science Big Data

Apr 6, 2021

During the Seminar on Solid Earth Science Big Data held at CUG on March 28, the Research Center for Solid Earth Science Big Data (hereinafter referred to as the Research Center) was established. Five members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Director of the Second Department of Earth Sciences, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), CUG leaderships, and over 200 experts, scholars, and students from the Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology, CAS, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS, Institute of Geochemistry, CAS, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Tianjin University, and Chengdu University of Technology attended the seminar in person or via the Internet.

CUG President WANG Yanxin made an opening speech in which he emphasized the importance of the modernization of earth science and expressed his hope of progress in building the Research Center.

REN Jianguo, Director of the Second Department of Earth Sciences, NSFC, expected the Research Center to promote the quantification of geology by giving priority to physical models and mathematical models of geological processes.

HUANG Xiaomei, Secretary of the Party Committee of CUG and CHENG Qiuming, member of the CAS officially announced the establishment of the Research Center.

Prof. ZUO Renguang from the State Key Laboratory of Geological Processes and Mineral Resources gave an account of the future plans of the Research Center. Then, 11 scholars made reports of big data for mineral exploration, earthquakes, topography, and planets, and the application of artificial intelligence in earth science.

Committed to integrating CUG’s advantages in solid earth science, big data science, computer science, information science, and other areas, the Research Center for Solid Earth Science aims for international influence by speeding up data storage and computing and advancing data sharing and visualization platform development.
