On March 12, 2021, Palaeontological Society of China announced Top 10 Paleontological Findings of 2020 in Nanjing, China. Two research results from CUG are among the top 10 list.
One is a research on biodiversity distribution during the period of the Permian–Triassic extinction event led by Prof. SONG, Haijun and Mr. DAI, Xu (a CUG doctoral student). This research suggests that environmental stability is critical for retaining a rich tropical marine fauna while drastic climate changes might specifically harm tropical ecosystems.
Another is on the climate change and forest fires during the transitional period of Triassic–Jurassic (fossil evidence from south China) led by CUG Prof. XIE, Shucheng and Prof. WANG, Yongdong (from Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences). The research uses innovative approaches to investigate ancient clime changes and forest fires.
Starting from 2017, Palaeontological Society of China has made annual announcement of the previous year’s top 10 findings in paleontology in China. The top 10 list reflects top-notch Chinese palaeontological research work in various branches of the subject.
