CUG holds 28th Wuhan International Gems and Jewelry Symposium & 1st Hubei Gems and Jewelry Engineering Technology Research Centre Conference

Gemological Institute of CUG held the 28th Wuhan International Gems and Jewelry Symposium & 1st Hubei Gems and Jewelry Engineering Technology Research Centre Conference from October 17 to 18.

Sixteen representatives had discussion from the two perspectives of gemology and processing & designing technologies. Guest speakers Dr. WANG Wuyi from the Gemological Institute of America and Prof. George Rossman from California Institute of Technology gave presentations on “Color Diamond Treatment and its Identification” and “Mineral Color and the Role of Changing Oxidation States” respectively. Dr. Michael Krzemnicki from the Swiss Gemmological Institute told the audience the answer of “Age dating applied as a testing procedure to gemstones and biogenic materials/Red ruby or pink sapphire, that’s the question”. Dr. Frank Cooper from Birmingham City University demonstrated “The reconstruction of a Anglo Saxon Golden Kings Helmet”. Ms. Marie Boltenstern from Boltenstern displayed “GmbH Boltenstern Fine Jewelry - coded by hand, crafted by technology”. Prof. SHEN Xitian, Prof. CHEN Tao, and Prof. HAO Liang from the Gemological Institute shared “Theory and Practice of EDXRF”, “Identification of Chicken Blood stone from Changhua and the Similar Species”, and “Engineering Technology and Advanced Manufacturing in Gems and Jewellery”.

In addition, there were video poster presentations including “Identification Characteristic of Symthetic Rock Crystal Cluster”, “Gemological Characteristics of Painite”, “Gemological Chracteristic of Emerald from Ethiopia”, “Jade Characteristic and Technological Evaluation of Turquoise Material Beads of M52 Tomb in Haochuan Vemetery, Suichang County, Zhejiang Province”, “Spectroscopic Characteristics of Weathering Skin of Seal Stone from Jinshifeng Field from Shoushan”, and “Fusion and Embracement in the Khitan Culture of Liao Dynasty: Symbolism in Metalwork”.

 

This year, the Symposium took place both online and offline. In the closing ceremony, Prof. YANG Mingxing, Dean of the Gemological Institute, affirmed that the purpose of the Symposium, which was to promote gemology and jewelry industry, stayed the same regardless of the way they held the Symposium.
