The opening ceremony of the School of Geography and Information Engineering was held on December 21. The leaders of CUG, the persons in charge of the research institutions of Hubei province, the representatives from over 10 universities, and the heads of units of CUG attended the opening ceremony.

The School of Geography and Information Engineering is jointly established by CUG, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (CAS), and the Institute of Science of Precision Measurement and Technological Innovation Research (CAS). In 2018, the School of Information Engineering, the Department of Geography of the School of Earth Sciences, and the Department of Regional Planning of the School of Public Administration amalgamated to form the new school, which was a significant strategic measure of CUG to complete its disciplinary system featuring earth system science.

The school has 1,721 undergraduate students, 547 postgraduate students, and 58 doctoral students who are taught by 149 teachers. In addition to undergraduate programs, it offers post-doctoral programs and doctoral programs in surveying and mapping as well as master’s programs in geology and software engineering. Moreover, the school boasts the National Engineering Research Center for Geographic Information System. Driven by new information technologies and earth observation techniques including big data, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, the school will further make best of CUG’s advantages in geography, surveying and mapping, and software engineering, focusing on the major issues of the three fields and the major practical needs of the Belt and Road initiative, sustainable development, natural resources and spatial planning, smart cities, and ecological civilization.
