On September 25, the 1st High-end Symposium on Deep Earth Drilling and Resource Development was held at CUG. Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, members of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, President and Vice President of the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Russian State University for Geological Prospecting, President of Chengdu University of Technology, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of CUG, and over 100 experts and scholars from home and abroad gathered together, discussing the deep earth drilling and resource development with the guidance of earth system science. LAI Xulong, Vice President of CUG presided over the opening ceremony.
HUANG Xiaomei, Secretary of the Party Committee of CUG, made a speech. She said that deep earth exploration and resource development are important issues concerning national economic development and social stability. The main purpose of the Symposium was to serve the development of deep earth resources, energy, space, and earth system science, with the guidance of the earth system science theories and supported by advanced exploration technologies such as deep drilling. She hoped that the participants could take this opportunity to further deepen understanding and cooperation, and take more action in interdisciplinary and cross-border cooperation and joint research.
DU Yun, Vice Director of the Science and Technology Department of Hubei Province thought that the High-end Symposium would play a leading role in international cooperation in the fields of geosciences and deep earth resource development in Hubei Province, and provide technical support for the stable and sustainable development of the Belt and Road Initiative. He hoped to seize the opportunity of the establishment of the International Joint Research Center for Deep Earth Drilling and Deep Earth Resource Development and the Symposium to make the Joint Reserach Center a platform and bridge, pooling global technologies and human resources so as to make greater contributions to the independent innovation ability and influence of Hubei.
JIAO Yuyong, Dean of the School of Engineering introduced the International Joint Research Center for Deep Earth Drilling and Deep Earth Resource Development. The Joint Research Center is constructed by leading universities in geosciences from countries including Switzerland, Russia, and the US, and CUG. It was accredited by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in 2018. The center carries out research based on national strategic goals, academic frontiers, and needs of national economic construction, gathers first-class scholars and important platforms of creative talents. It also acts as a center of international scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges as well as an influential demonstration base of multidisciplinary collaboration and international innovation.
Kosyanov Vadim spoke highly of the historical cooperation between the two univeristies and expressed that they would promote exchanges and cooperation with CUG in deep earth drilling technologies, deep earth resource development, and earth system science.
Many scholars delivered invited speeches to share research results, analyze opportunities and challenges, and put forward suggestions for the Joint Research Center.
The Symposium was co-sponsored by the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Russian State University for Geological Prospecting and CUG.
