CUG Climbing Gym, located on West Campus, is currently used for teaching and training. It is one of the training fields of theChinese National Climbing Team and the Hubei Provincial Climbing Team.
The Climbing Gym was built in 2003. The first National College Student Rock Climbing Championship was held here in the same year. In 2008, the Rock Hall was expanded. An international standard speed track was built and standard speed points were installed. The 8 sets of standard bouldering walls that had been used for the Asian Championships were moved here and built into the gym after the event. It became a professional competition-level climbing gym and one of the best climbing gyms in Chinese universities. Since 2008, major rock climbing events, such as the National Youth Championships and the Hubei Provincial Rock Climbing Championships, have been held in the gym frequently.
As rockclimbing will be in the Olympic Games for the first time in 2020, the sport is gaining in popularity in recent years. After renovations and expansions in 2018, CUG Climbing Gym now claims to be the best and most comprehensive climbing gym in Chinese universities. It has professional route setters to set the route.
CUG Climbing Gym isproud to be the cradle of generations of champions of Chinese competitive rock climbing. The gym is the home of the top Chinese rock climbers, such as Cao Rongwu, Huang Liping, Cai Luyuan, Zhang Dan, Song Yanfeng, Cao Chuan, Liang Rongqi, Niu Di and Pan Yufei. While meeting the training needs of professional climbers, it also plays an important role in daily teachings of the university, allowing more students to learn this unique and charming sport.
