CUG celebrated a remarkable mountaineering achievement as two of its alumni reached the summit of Mount Everest within days of each other via different routes during the 2025 climbing season.

SONG Hong (CUG ’07 undergrad, ’13 master’s, School of Sports Science and Physical Education) summited via the South Slope (Nepal) at 8:25 AM Beijing Time on May 18.

LI Shengtao (CUG ’25 master’s candidate, School of Sports Science and of Physical Education) summited via the North Slope (Tibet) at 6:29 AM Beijing Time on May 25.
These ascents bring CUG’s historic tally to 29 successful Everest summits by 16 individuals.
Renowned as the “Cradle of Chinese Mountaineers”, CUG has uniquely integrated mountaineering with earth sciences since its establishment 72 years ago, offering specialized courses and training over 6,000 mountaineering professionals. This legacy includes alumnus WANG Fuzhou, who led the first successful ascent of Everest’s North Slop by humans in 1960.
