Prof. CHEN Gang and his son CHEN Lihao reached the top of Mount Everest at about 10:30 am (Beijing time) on April 30. Their climbing is a tribute to the 70th anniversary of CUG.
Prof. CHEN Gang, born in November of 1971, is an excellent researcher of Surveying and Mapping at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan); CHEN Lihao, born in July of 2001, is a sophomore of Surveying and Mapping Engineering at China University of Geosciences (Beijing) as well as national first-level mountaineer and national second-level rock climber.
Prof. CHEN climbed the highest peaks on three continents and hiked to the South and North Poles. Since 2012, he has climbed Mount Everest three times for research. In 2020, as the technical leader of surveying, he participated in the joint height measurement of Mount Everest by China and Nepal.
This time, the father and son collected many samples of ice and snow, and specimens of plants and rocks. They also conducted some experiments with domestic GPS equipment.
