If it weren’t for the sudden outbreak of the pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus, the undergraduate students of CUG would have started their new semester on February 10. Although the epidemic is still serious and the campus is closed, teachers and students at CUG began a special new semester through the information technology and Internet.

The new semester should have begun on February 10, and 1,006 courses were scheduled to start in the first week, but the epidemic disrupted CUG’s original arrangements. Making the health and safety of teachers and students top priority, CUG decided to postpone the campus opening. At the same time, CUG established an effective response mechanism and developed countermeasures to guarantee the continuance of academic activities during the period of the epidemic prevention and control.
From January 30 to February 7, the Academic Affairs Office issued guidance documents to help the teachers and students from the policy and technical perspectives and started preparation for online teaching. Lectures are given on various online course platforms, like Chaoxing, iCourses, Zhihuishu, and Xuetangx. At present, CUG has 201 courses on Chaoxing alone.
The teaching and research sections are responsible to make teaching plans and choose a platform for each course. The teachers are required to provide syllabuses and learning materials in QQ groups of classes, to teach students through Internet by video, live online classes, online discussion, online Q&A, and so on. The Academic Affairs Office announced the identification numbers of QQ groups of 1,455 courses. Then students joined the groups of the chosen courses to learn online through the syllabuses, materials, and assignments provided by teachers.
