SHEN Che, a master student of the Gemological Institute won the first prize of 2018 Eduard Gubelin Most Valuable Article for his article "The Color Origin of Gem Diaspore: Correlation to Corundum", which was completed under the guidance of Prof. LU Ren and published in the US magazine "Gem and Gemology". This is the first time a Chinese researcher has won the award.
By using analogy research methods and technical means, such as modern spectroscopy, trace element testing, and color analysis, the essay well explains the origin of color of diaspore, which is a special category of gemstone. Meanwhile, the research method adopted in this essay has become a pioneering application of the gemological analogy research method and has played a good exemplary role for the innovation of gemological research methodology.
The "Gem and Gemology" magazine, edited by Gemological Institute of America, is the most authoritative academic journal in the gem industry. Since 1982, Gemological Institute of America has been awarding the first, second, and third prizes for three articles selected from all articles published every year. Since 1997, the award has been officially renamed Eduard Gubelin Most Valuable Article Award to commemorate the outstanding contribution of Eduard Gubelin, a pioneer in the field of gemology.
So far, there have been 36 winners of the first-prize of the most valuable articles in the world, most of which are contributed by top scholars in the field.
