10 Suggestions from a CUG Prof. to Complaints about Lockdown

Feb 27, 2020

The COVID-19 epidemic control and prevention has entered a critical phase. However, some residents are making complaints about the policy of home isolation and enclosed management. A CUG Prof. wrote 10 suggestions for them. In the face of the epidemic, what does a professor say? Let’s take a look.

According to the experts, it will take some time for the present COVID-19 epidemic situation to take a turn for the better. The works on epidemic control and prevention are still going to last for a period. A series of hard works await to be done in the following days by the university leaders of CUG, and all departments, including the President’s Office, Department of Safety and Security, Department of Logistical Services, International Education College, Department of Student Services, University Hospital, Alumni Association and Community Administration, etc., as well as all kinds of groups and committees temporarily organized for the epidemic control and prevention.

At present, as the winter vacation is extended, many of the university staff have not returned and all departments are short of hands. Besides the works for staff on duty in university, a lot of works are done by the voluntary staff who are also the CPC members. For instance, the very first 15 people who made the team on patrol duty were composed of several department leaders. Some people have even gone to work for 30 days in a row without any day off. It is said that a system of working in shifts will be taken in the next phase. As a result, a number of volunteers are need for the epidemic control and prevention in addition to all department leaders and the CPC members at CUG.

I personally did a survey through online and telephone approaches and would like to suggest that we can recruit more volunteers from the CUG community residents. They can make applications through the departments where they are working, and the departments will collect the information and submit it to the university.

Many university staff and community residents have proposed various constructive advices to the works on epidemic control and prevention at CUG, some of which were adopted. It should be admitted that those advices really gave a fresh impetus to the implementation, amelioration and improvement of the current epidemic control and prevention.

Additionally, regarding some highly personalized needs proposed by a few community residents, I humbly suggest combining the volunteer recruitment and epidemic control and prevention together and then provide some recruitment pathways targeted at those community residents with special needs.

1. For some few residents who always go outside to sun themselves, it is suggest for them to apply for the volunteer job as the entrance guards at the four main gates of CUG, thus they can enjoy the sunshine for 5 to 7 days in a row per week.

2. For some few residents who are obsessed with taking a walk outdoors, it is suggested for them to apply for the volunteer job as the inspection and patrol team members who can take a walk on campus without stop every day.

3. For some few residents who think the epidemic is just “that kind of thing” or “nothing special”, it is suggested for them to apply to the department of logistical services for the volunteer job as healthcare personnel who conduct sterilization on campus. As a result, the university don’t need to hire some professional sterilization vendors to come to carry out sterilization, which saves a big cost. What’s more, the consumption of protective articles will be cut by half because they have no fear of “that kind of thing”.

4. For some few residents who complain about the lack of variety for vegetable supply, it is suggested for them to apply to the department of logistical services and Zhongshang supermarket for the volunteer job as vegetable purchasers. They can go to Huangpi district for snatching vegetables in the afternoon until 11pm in the evening. The job description is like, quickly grabbing bags of vegetables from the large vegetable truck and carry them to the CUG truck with the fastest speed. They should remember to grab as many as vegetable varieties and to grab the vegetable bags on the top of the truck, because the ones in the bottom may be crushed. Carrying vegetables back and forth between the vegetable truck and university truck for several hours is also a kind of good exercise.

5. For some few residents who complain that they got crushed green peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, yellow cabbage leaves etc. in vegetable packages. It is suggested for them to apply to the department of logistical services and Zhongshang supermarket for the volunteer job as vegetable sorting workers. At 7:30 am every day, they can go to the Zhongshang supermarket in the eastern campus to sort vegetables and bag them, so as to ensure that the damaged vegetables are not put into packages. It can also prevent some “non-high-quality service”, for example, putting the damaged vegetables into bags due to lack of hands at department of logistical services and Zhongshang supermarket, which thus may reduce the trouble of free exchange of damaged vegetables.

6. For some few residents who cried out “no food” “so hungry” “much oppressed” in the Wechat group, it is suggested for them to apply for the volunteer job as life services personnel at the Future City campus. It is reported that the student apartment on Future City campus will receive more than 400 medical personnel from other provinces to support the epidemic control and prevention in Wuhan. Consequently, the Future City campus office is understaffed and has borrowed some staff from other departments. Vice-president Liu Jie led a team of 20 people, mainly composed of department directors, to support the new campus. Once they become volunteers at the new campus, they will be starved. It is guaranteed that volunteers can have as many as box meals as they wish, not to mention the fresh air there. To do some life services as a repayment is not a big deal.

7. For some few residents who complained about “no steamed bun to eat” in the Wechat group, it is suggested for them to apply for the job as “steamed bun delivery volunteers” at the East canteen. They can get up before sunrise and go to help make and pack steamed buns and then deliver them to each building every day. They can enjoy the privilege of buying steamed buns first.

8. For some few residents who make complaints about the low efficiency of rubbish removal, it is suggested for them to apply to the department of logistical services for the volunteer job as cleaners. They have only two tasks. One is to offer help to the cleaning workers who kept on working for more than one month since the Spring Festival vacation to handle with rubbish removal, and the other is to persuade other residents not to throw rubbish everywhere.

9. For some few residents who complained in the group and asked why the department of logistical services could not do more for them and why they did not recruit more volunteers if they were short of hands. It is suggested for them to apply for the volunteer job as workers performing enclosed management services. They can actively participate in the works of delivering vegetables to the doorstep and going to knock everyone’s door to collect garbage. If they are volunteers, they are not only permitted to go outside, but also can make due contributions to the maintenance of a clean and beautiful campus.

10. For some few residents with good eloquence, it is recommended for them to apply for the volunteer job as persuaders at the four university gates, the underground garage of Yujia Village or to join the patrol team. Their job is to persuade the residents who have violated the rules and regulations of enclosed management but always have many reasons. I also suggest them to do some homework on dealing with the following reasons:

“I just want to take a walk. Tell me which law says I cannot go out for a walk.”

“I don’t see any regulation that forbids me to go out and pick up delivery packages.”

“I just want to sun myself. The nice sunshine is for people to enjoy.”

“My dogs cannot stay home for a long time, and they are very important.”

“I'm not infected. Why can't I go out?”

“It's none of your business whether I get infected or not.”

“There are only a few variety of vegetables at home. I’m going out to buy some.”

The suggestions above may not be fully considerate and reasonable, and they are just for our university leaders to take as reference. If those suggestions can be employed, the works on epidemic control and prevention at CUG must be improved to some extent. Therefore, people who are picky and always complaining would like to think twice before speaking in public, and the comprehensive ability of the residents in our community to tackle with special emergencies will definitely be much enhanced.

As a teacher who has stayed at CUG for many years, I earnestly request all residents to live a simple life and try not to trouble the community administration staff with their personal needs. We shall take the interests of the whole into account and shall not propose any excessive demand just for indulging our appetite. Each one of us must learn to be a civilized, self-disciplined, respectable and lovable resident. I sincerely hope the epidemic situation at CUG will soon take a favorable turn. Words have it that no new suspected case has been found at the Nanwangshan campus since Feb. 17.

I am fully confident that CUG will embrace a better future.
