CUG currently has 86 research institutes and laboratoriesincluding two national key laboratoriesone national engineering laboratory14 provincial or ministerial key laboratories, engineering research centersas well as one humanities and social science research base.

Stale Key Laboratory of Biogeology and Environmental Geology (BGEG)

The BGEG focuses on researching the interaction of biology and environment and its effect on geological systemsespecially in regards to geological microorganisms and the hydrologic system Within the field of biogeology, the laboratory has formed three relevant scientific research directionsthe co-evolution of life and environment during the great geological mutation periodthe ecological response and feedback of environmental events since the Cenozoic Era and geological processes and the effect of biology and environment in contemporary time

Former Premier Wen Jiabao(alumnus graduated in 1968) returned to his alma mater and inspected BGEG

The Key scientific issues of BGEG are the interaction and CO-evolution between biology and environment in the great geological changing periodwith the main focus on the interaction between geological microorganisms and theft water environment The laboratory hopes to realize

breakthroughs in the following areas

  (1) exploring the life-environment system and functional mechanism as the main biological and environmental events of geological time

  (2) exploring the feedback and effects between climate events and ecological changes by  situating regional events in relation to global changes

  (3) exploring the water-rock—raw interaction and geological environmental effects under the influence of human actions as the effect of abnormal biology on environmental events since industrial revolution.

Around the scientific key of geobiology and relying on the time resolution of biology and environmental geology events and processthe laboratory formed t11ree relevant scientific research directionsthe co-evolution of life and environment during the great geological mutation period; the ecological response and feedback of environmental events since Cenozoic and the geological process and the effect of biology and environment in contemporary time.
